The Department of Anthropology congratulates Kathryn Beukeboom on winning this year's Richard B Lee Award, which is given to the most outstanding student essay in critical Anthropology written in an St. George Anthropology or Archaeology course during the 2022-23 academic year, in any sub-field.

Kathryn's essay, “The Hand that Feeds: Assessing the Impact of Canada’s Colonial History on Diet and Incidence of Nutrition-Related Disease in Indigenous People” was written for ANT434H which was taught by Michelle Cameron.

Since graduating, Kathryn has recently started her Master’s in Plant Agriculture at the University of Guelph, and hopes to contribute to research that makes our food systems more equitable and sustainable. She thanks Dr. Bence Viola, Dr. Michelle Cameron, and all other staff in the Department of Anthropology that helped her realize her interest in human subsistence.
